Introduction to Prose and Poetry

1.      From all the stories we studied in class, what are the TWO most difficult conflicts to solve. And if you were in these stories, how would you solve the conflicts?
Every story that we studied in class has different conflict and has different way to solve. From the entire story have two important conflicts from two stories that are very difficult to solve. There are the conflicts in “The well” and “The member of the wedding”.
For the first story, The well, the main conflict is man vs man, talks about racial discrimination. In this story, there were two families that had different color skin included black and white. They had an argument about the well but the important conflict was not the well, it was discrimination between two families. The well belonged to the black, Logan family. Every family in the village came to get water from the well of Logan and also the white, the Simme family. But whenever the white came to get the water, they would argue with the Lagan. I think the conflict was happen from the conflict in the past. Because in the past, it was normally that the white took the black to their slave. And the white always used power to bully the black and when the black did something, it was judged to wrong and they was punished. So, the black dislike the slavery so much, they still kept the conflict from the past to the present. Therefore, it could cause to another conflict especially conflict about the well.
If I were in this story, I would explain both two families about the discrimination and the well also. I would request both Simme and Logan to open their mind. The black might forget the conflict in the past and the white might not insult the black. They should accept each other. They would be believed that the black and the white can live together. And the conflict about the well, I would tell them to share each other. The well was like the sympathy, if they shared the well, it was the same as they shared the sympathy.
And the second story, the member of the wedding, the main conflict was man vs himself. In this story, Frankie was a girl who was growing up and would be like other. At the first time, she like her brother so she did everything like her brother for example, her hair style was short like her brother. Then, when she saw her friend who was beautiful, she also likes to be her friend. She didn’t stand on herself. She tried to do everything like the person that she likes. She didn’t understand about her age and her maturity so she always changed herself and did something that unsuitable for her.

If I were one of the characters in the story, I would explain everything that was useful for Frankie. She might have self confident and stood on herself. She shoule make up her mind about what would she want to be. I would make her believe that whatever she did was the best thing for her. Didn’t try to change to be other, would be proud in herself.
These two conflicts above are very difficult to solve but it is disappear by the person who has consciousness to solve. If someone carefully consider about the conflict, they will easily find the way to solve this conflict. The ways that I advise them before are also the good way to solve the conflict. Therefore, the best way that make someone can solve every conflict is believe in yourselves and have consciousness to judge everything.

2.      Do you think the characters in “The Yellow Woman” and “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” are too gullible? Do you think they believe in myths and supernatural being too much? Discuss.
Yes, I do. I think the characters in “The Yellow Woman” and “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” are too gullible. From the story about “The Yellow Woman”, the Yellow Woman was too gullible because she believes her grandfather about the story of the yellow woman. She believes that Silva was the immortal so she followed him to his house. She lived together with the man that she didn’t know anything about him. She wondered that he was the man in the story that she heard before so she tried to ask him everything. Sometimes, she thought she was like the yellow woman in the story of grandfather. From “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, almost all of people were gullible. They believe that the old man was the angel because of his wings. They thought that if he was the mortal, he must not have wings but he has wings so he was an immortal. Someone paid money to watch the old man because they thought it was the chance to meet the angle. And someone helped him to fly away from this village because they still believe he was an angel.
I think the characters in both two stories were very gullible. The character in “The Yellow Woman” believes in myths. She believes her grandfather and also believes the man. She thought the situation in this story would happen with her. And the characters in “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” believe in supernatural. They thought their village has the angel, the angel came to help them.
The characters in both two stories should consider. There were many effects that happen from their believing. Therefore, when we decide to believe something, we must consider carefully because it can be good or bad for us. Learning from the story of
“The Yellow Woman” and “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”

3.      In your opinion, believing in myths is good or bad for your life? Explain with specific examples from the stories we studied in class.
Believing in myths is good and also bad for my life. In my life, there are many myths that I believe, sometimes, true and sometimes, not. Every myth that I believe can cause my life, it can make me happy and can make me feel terrible too.
I have been believed in guardian spirit since I was young. If the house has the shrine, it believes that the spirit will live in there and protects everybody in the house from the dangers. My mother told me that when someone in my family died, they will not go anywhere, they will live in the shrine that their children make for them. The children must give food for them. Believing in this myth is good and bad for me. It’s good that when I live in my house, I am very happy when I know that anything can injure me because in my house has the protector. If we want to move the shrine, we must tell to the spirit. If the shrine is place in the wrong place, something will happen. It’s only one thing that I think badly for me because I’m fear if it will happen so it’s the bad thing about myth of shrine.
This myth is quite the same with the Barter in the book. It talks about moving something to the wrong place. In the Barter, the old man banned the architect that didn’t move Sala Hoikao to another place because he believes myth that his ancestor told him. But the architect didn’t believe him, he took Sala Hoikao to his house. One day, the strange event was happen, the poles of Sala Hoikao shook and finally fell down. The old man was very sad when he saw because he loves it so much. Then, the old man said to the architect that he placed the poles in the wrong position, they were not the same so they finally fell down. Each pole had the own function, if we changed the position, they would not balance. From this story, everyone learned about moving something to the wrong place and the suitable position of the pole.
Sometimes, myth is very important because something can happen when someone do the wrong thing because they never learn and never know about myth. I think we should learn about myth but you will believe or not it depends on you.
