Should
animals be kept in zoos?
Nowadays, there are many kinds of animal in the world.
Some animals live in forests and some are kept in zoos. Keeping animals in zoos
is the best way to protect them from danger, but leaving them to natural way is
another important point to consider. Anna said that "It is bad because
they have been taken away from their natural surroundings, but good because
they get well fed and looked after." (Anna: 2010) Although some people
agree that animals should be kept in zoos, I still believe that animals will
have happiness when they live in their original place.
First, the facts that keep dangerous animals in the zoos
are better than leave them in the forests. Despite some people believe that
dangerous animals should live in the zoos because they will not be able to
injure people, but there are many situations that show the opposite side.
Sometimes, dangerous animals can injure the people when they live in the zoos because
dangerous animals still have their own instinct. For example, the argument “it is very bad to keep animals in zoos because they need to
go to where they really live the jungle. Cause then they will get angry and go
on rampages killing people like the tiger in San Francisco that killed the
trainer and injured 2 men.” (www.answer.com).
I believe that animals should live in the forests. If animals live in the
forests, they will not have chance to see people. Therefore, they cannot injure
people.
Second, the argument about zoo animals is healthier than wild
animals. The zoos have good breeding and treating programs for animals. When
zoo animals are hungry, they will have food to eat. Also, when they get sick,
they will have good medicines to treat. However, in fact, wild animals have
their instincts to find food and treat their illness by the natural way to
survive. Sometimes, zoos animals have to wait for their food. After they ate
food, some animals still hungry. They have to wait for next meal and sometimes
the zoos do not have enough food for them. The scientist said that “elephants
do not do well in zoos. The average lifespan of zoo elephants is about 16-18
years, while wild elephants can live 50-70 years.” (www.veganpeace.com).
The final argument is about animals will be happy if they
live in the zoos. Some people say that the zoos have wide area for animals to
travel. Zoo animals can go for many miles. On the contrary, some zoo animals
have stress and express through their behaviors. The signs of stress or boredom
that you can see in zoo animals are pacing backwards and forwards, head
bobbing, rocking, repeatedly retracing their steps, sitting motionless or
biting themselves. For example, the scientist shows the scientific term for
repetitive behaviors in zoo animals. This covers all the strange looking
behavior we can see in zoo animals. These behaviors are caused by conditions
like depression and boredom. (www.veganpeace.com).
This evidence shows that the arguments about animals
should be kept in zoos is invalid. Although many people believe that zoo
animals are happier than wild animals, I strongly agree that animals will
be happy if they live in their original place. As the studies of the scientists
show the disadvantages of keeping animals in the zoos, I offer to leave them in
forests because there are many advantages of leaving animals in the forests. Therefore,
in my opinion, animals should not be kept in the zoos.
